It seems like that while all tech giants in the US congratulated the Biden Administration on the inauguration day with tweets and applauds, Elon Musk technically supported a Biden initiative with an influx of $100 million.
Elon Musk tweeted recently:
“Am donating $100M towards a prize for best carbon capture technology,”
He further added, in a sequel tweet, that details regarding this will be shared next week. The Biden administration is on its track to join the Paris accord for climate change, next month, which was trashed by the out-going President Trump. The prize money announced for carbon capturing technology could provide a valuable boost to save the climate, which is on the agenda for the newly elected President Biden.
It was also reported by Reuters:
“Newly-sworn-in U.S. President Joe Biden has pledged to accelerate the development of carbon capture technology as part of his sweeping plan to tackle climate change. On Thursday, he named Jennifer Wilcox, an expert in carbon removal technologies, as the principal deputy assistant secretary for fossil energy at the U.S. Department of Energy.”
Apart from growing trees, capturing the harmful carbon emissions from the industries is also a very important aspect, regarding keeping the climate change in check. The main focus in the previous years was to decrease the emissions, rather than capturing the emissions from the air.
As the world’s economy and population grows, reducing emissions will not be sufficient, and plans need to be made to develop technologies which could help clean the air, by capturing carbon emissions directly from the air.
The carbon capturing technologies are really expensive, and it would really take a lot more than $100 million to have a significant impact in this regard, but a tweet and competition with prize money could get the word around, and other world leaders and tech tycoons might also join the bandwagon in saving the planet Earth.
